Vinyl On Wood

Wooden Records A project that I came across on instructables by Amanda Ghassaei takes a different approach to the term ‘tree rings’. In this the grooves have been lasered onto an circular slab of wood and although this is not practical or an improvement in terms of sound quality etc the material selection and execution ties in very well with the traditional aesthetic associations with vinyl records to old wooden gramophones and record shelves, which is a design theme to look into for my project.    Another project that I found interesting that also relates to this tree rings theme is called ‘Years’ which actually plays and modifies music by sensing the layered rings of the inside of a tree. The devices produces an abstract piece experimental music and the project draws intriguing parallels between the two very different mediums.
